The objective of the World Awareness for Children in Trauma (WACIT -www.wacit.org) is the development of an evidence-based psychosocial model for vulnerable children who experience extreme adversity, but who may have limited access to specialist resources. WACIT particularly operates in conflict settings with children exposed to war trauma and other types of violence, living in slums, orphanages, on the streets, and refugees. The program involves partner centers (NGOs and Universities) from 12 countries, and a range of international organizations.
Program activities (already delivered in Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan and Bangladesh) involve inter-professional training on child trauma recognition and interventions, network-building, and research. To date, the program has been attended by more than 500 practitioners and caregivers. and over 100 children. Its first phase has been evaluated through interviews and questionnaires with key participating stakeholders.
The current priorities of WACIT are to extend partnerships across the world, build networks around targeted vulnerable groups, develop different levels of training by using new technologies, and produce evidence-base on their integration and sustainability. The implications of the six WACIT dimensions will be discussed in relation to current needs in Asian countries, i.e.: Safety, Nurturing, School and Community Resilience, Application of Therapeutic Approaches, Psychological Interventions, and Access to Child Mental Health Services.
